His personal record was reportedly 2,140 kills in a day.įranz Ferdinand shot his first tiger on a six-week trip to India in 1893. “Anything that moved, he was ready to shoot,” said Lebow. Tigers in India, kangaroos, emus and wallabies in Australia and stag and deer in the forests of Austria all met their demise at the end of the archduke’s rifle. Cohen says that this readiness to dismiss the vulnerable nephew as a viable heir planted in him a seed of resentment toward the Habsburg Imperial Court (one that would grow). It’s subtle enough to avoid cartoonish trappings where fantasies pop up and burst like animated speech bubbles, but loses focus in the name of some kind of discretion. Signe’s delusion takes us deep into her mind as her existence balances between actions so reprehensible she must be making them up and daydreams so wild it’s a real shame they’re actually untrue. ![]() ![]() It’s a nice thought for this man but a shame for what could have been a despicable modern-day “Bonnie and Clyde”, instead locking you in a room with, as Julie knew from the start, the worst young woman you will ever meet. And that’s what happens to Thomas: a strange kind of Instagram boyfriend who, instead of succumbing to his girlfriend’s vices, simply, well, does better and sees the light and fades from view. Visual gags sing as much as caustic scripting, as Signe throws her laptop out the window for no real reason before later being told by Anders Danielsen Lie (in the greatest cameo of the doctor-turned-actor’s career) that she has such a bad personality that a police car is waiting outside to execute her.ĭeath rarely fades from view in Borgli’s increasingly bleak comedy, which does somewhat of a disservice to the narrative trajectory - not because it flirts with oblivion but because its path is so stratospheric and dogged in the direction it’s going that it can be pretty hard to hold on for your life and not get left behind. It’s beyond satire and extremely close to body horror, as the disease mutates and the genre of “Sick of Myself” swells until it explodes, leaving a bloody mess in its midst.īut however sticky “Sick of Myself” gets, there’s rarely much doubt about how funny it is. But then what? The lies pile up, and her seesawing existence between self-pity and a search for something always more painful becomes increasingly corrosive. Finally, everyone around Signe begins to notice her plight (and Kujath Thorp maintains an awe-inspiring level of deluded stubbornness throughout) and, for a minute, she’s won. Many, many pills later, the rash begins to spread. Because does pain or pleasure really exist if you can’t see it? Signe decides the only way to be noticed will be to take the very necessary and very illegal drugs that will give her an extremely rare and serious skin disease. Borgli takes the film in a darker direction than the vignettes where these big kids just keep embarrassing themselves (she pretends to have a severe nut allergy, while he steals, uh, chairs). Thomas’ career as an avant-garde kleptomaniac artist skyrockets, and Signe is coughing up dust. ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ Review: Time Is of the Essence in a Sequel That Gets Old Fastīut there’s a shift. ![]() It might be how they fell in love but it’ll also be how they grow to despise one another, their shared vices quickly turning into a competition: When two people are dying for attention in this way, the only possible outcome is total annihilation. We begin with a shared focus on Signe and her artist boyfriend Thomas (Eirik Sæther), two equally grating people obsessed with doing bad things (sometimes to make other people feel bad, but also just to feel literally anything themselves) because they don’t know how to do anything else. When Renate Reinsve’s wandering heroine Julie from “The Worst Person in the World” worried about just how detestable she might become, she was probably thinking about someone like Signe (Kristine Kujath Thorp) in “ Sick of Myself.” Another Oslo Pictures feature, though more acerbic and uncomfortable than Joachim Trier’s beloved romantic comedy, Kristoffer Borgli’s scathing portrait of nihilistic narcissism taps into similar deadpan humor but walks a much more precarious tightrope between uncomfortable satire and plain cruelty. Utopia releases the film in theaters on Wednesday, April 12. No accomplishment brings a Cheshire grin to Gaetz's face like hanging up from a praising phone call with Trump.Ī lot of people whose politics don't align with Gaetz, Buck, or Massie's will not be interested in watching a two-hour documentary where they staunchly defend the divisive president. On more than one occasion, Gaetz proudly takes out his phone and dials Trump (saved as "POTUS" in his contacts) and they exchange flattering compliments with each other. The documentary feels intended to spotlight his role in Washington, but showing his bigger interest in elevating his political celebrity distracts from the substantive topics in the movie. "The Swamp" derails itself when it gives Gaetz a podium to bloviate and showboat for the camera. Gaetz and Khanna worked together on the National Defense Authorization Act, which allocates money for the United States Department of Defense. That's the meat of "The Swamp," which covers a lot of topics, from the staunch defense of Trump to genuine moments of bipartisanship between Gaetz and Democratic congressmen Ro Khanna. Focusing on Gaetz's political fame is nowhere near as interesting as defining the swamp and how politicians walk the fine line of fundraising in light of the guidelines imposed upon them by their party. That is the inherent flaw of the documentary, which has some fascinating talking points. From the outset, it's clear that "The Swamp" is most interested in what Gaetz has to say. He has a tiny room in his office, which used to be a work closet for the previous congressman, where he has a bed and bathroom so he can wake up and get right to work. The movie opens with Gaetz waking up and getting ready for a day in Washington. Talking heads from Buck and Massie appear throughout the documentary, but Gaetz is predominantly spotlighted from the beginning. The movie follows three Republican congressmen: Ken Buck of Colorado, Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Matt Gaetz of Florida. The result is an interesting, if scattershot and frustratingly unfocused, new HBO documentary special. Best After 2029.Įxpressive and vibrant, with a cassis bush aroma that leaps to the forefront, followed quickly by sleek and dense black currant, black Mission fig and black cherry preserve flavors flanked by a racy graphite note. Pichon Baron was one of the great deals of the en primeur campaign, and readers who purchased futures are to be congratulated on their foresight. Perfumed and resonant, this is a profound young Pauillac that bears more of a resemblance to its neighbor Château Latour than to Pichon Lalande this year. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, sweet loamy soil and violets, it's full-bodied, velvety and layered, with superb concentration, lively acids and rich, powdery tannins. The 2019 Pichon-Longueville Baron will go down as one of this chateau's great wines of the modern era, along with 2016, 20. It unquestionably already offers pleasure today (and it's a good time to try a bottle, as I wouldn't be surprised to see it close down), but it will need a decade to hit maturity and it will be a 50-year wine. It's more open and expressive than Mouton and shares plenty of similarities with Comtesse with its layered, supple, just perfectly balanced and classy style. Revealing a deep purple hue as well textbook notes of blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, freshly sharpened pencils, and liquid violets, it shows the more medium to full-bodied, elegant style of the vintage yet is brilliantly concentrated, has a supple, layered mouthfeel, ripe yet building tannins, and a great, great finish. The highest ever proportion of cabernet.īased on 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot raised in 80% new French oak, the 2019 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is pure class and just a beautiful, seamless Pauillac that does everything right. Chewy, yet so tailored and wonderfully proportioned. Full-bodied, very long and linear with incredible length. Drink from 2027.īlackberries and blueberries with stone and graphite. It shows all the power and the open quality of the vintage. It brings an impressive structure to the wine, rich tannins and powerful black fruits. On a par with the great 2016, this stunning wine has a palate that combines fleshy, velvety texture and linearity as well as remarkable length, and provides convincing testimony of the progress achieved by the estate’s technical team.Īs always, it is the Cabernet Sauvignon that sings. Some touches of graphite and subtle spices come into the aromatic mix. The ‘grand vin’ of Château Pichon Comtesse is praised universally and considered an ‘almost’ First Growth for its sheer class, finesse and ageing potential. The bouquet enchants by its expression of pure, crunchy fruit and florality without a trace of oakiness despite barrel-aging with 80% new wood. Under Technical Director, Nicolas Glumineau, formerly of Château Montrose, biodynamic farming is being introduced for new vineyard plots and may be expanded across the entire estate. Huge investments have been made in recent years, notably in a gravity-fed vinification process that preserves freshness from the moment the grapes arrive at the winery to the point where the wine goes into oak barrels for ageing. The ‘grand vin’ represents 50% of production and has around 70% Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blend. The second wine, Pichon Comtesse Réserve, known as Réserve de la Comtesse until the 2017 vintage, is made from younger vines and specific plots. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are also planted here. When Baron Joseph Pichon de Longueville died in 1850, the land was split between his children into Châteaux Pichon Comtesse and Pichon Baron. In 1925, the Miailhe family acquired the estate and their daughter, May Eliane de Lencquesaing, owned and managed the property from 1978 to 2006 when she sold to the Rouzaud family, owners of Champagne Louis Roederer among other prestigious wineries.Īn ongoing replanting programme will expand the area under vine from 74 to 90 hectares by 2022 which in turn should increase the share of Cabernet Sauvignon from 55% to 65%. Soil mapping has enabled each parcel to be matched to the ideal grape variety so that Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on the gravel soils, with Merlot on the sandy and clay sub-soils. The estate once belonged to Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan in the 17 th Century as a dowry for his daughter and passed to Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville upon marriage. Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, more commonly known as Pichon Lalande or Pichon Comtesse, is in the appellation of Pauillac. Ranked a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it is classed unofficially as a ‘Super Second’ due to the high prices achieved for its wines. |
